All good things must come to an end, and that is what happened to Tony Dungy. He was a staple analyst on NBC’s Football Night in America for 17 seasons, joining the network in 2009. It all ended last month, when reports indicated he had been removed from his regular role as part of a major revamp of the pregame show.

The Athletic’s Andrew Marchan reported that the network was planning to “revamp” its signature pregame show before Sunday Night Football. Marchand added that Dungy was “likely out” as a regular on the show.

A final decision on Dungy’s future was not made, and the report indicated there was still a small chance the network could reverse course. The report further suggested the possibility of Tony Dungy being given an “emeritus” role. Bob Costas and Al Michaels were given similar roles in the past.

If taken, Dungy could keep a connection to NBC while contributing in a reduced role. Unfortunately, that will not be happening.

It is officially over. Tony Dungy’s tenure as a football analyst at NBC Sports is official.

NBC Sports has cut the former NFL coach from “Football Night in America,” Dungy said in a tweet on Thursday.

“I have been informed by NBC that I won’t be back with FNIA this fall, and it has given me time to reflect and also to look ahead,” he wrote on Thursday. “It’s disappointing news, but I want to thank my NBC family for making the last 17 years so special.”

It has been quite the tenure for Dungy. Earlier this year, fans called for him to be fired after he made comments about Bill Belichick. The football world was stunned to learn that Belichick was snubbed from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tony Dungy refused to disclose his vote, leaving social media to assume he did not vote for him.

In the meantime, additional plans for “Football Night in America” could include taking the show entirely on the road for the 2026 season.
