Former NFL running back Clinton Portis made a shocking decision in 2012 when he decided to walk away from football. Nine years after that surprising decision, Portis revealed the real reason behind it.
On Thursday, Aug. 23, Portis announced his decision during a 25-minute speech. It was just a formality since he hadn’t been in the league since 2010. The then Washington Redskins welcomed him for a final farewell before he walked into the sunset.
A lot of speculation surrounded that decision, with many suggesting it had something to do with injuries or money. Portis waited nearly a decade to clarify his decision.
Clinton Portis Cites Sean Taylor Reason To Retire At 30

During a 2021 interview on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” show, Clinton Portis explained why he decided to call it a career. After seeing the Redskins remove Sean Taylor’s locker room for the next player, rather than preserving it or building around it, Portis felt it was disrespectful to his late teammate.
“I left the game at 30 for a different reason,” he said. “Once they moved Sean Taylor’s locker out of the locker room, my love for the game disappeared. For a guy that we looked at as like a God, and they moved his locker to put someone else there to create space – there was plenty of space in that locker room you could’ve built a new locker, you didn’t have to remove Sean Taylor’s locker – and at that time, I was just too sensitive.”
Taylor was tragically killed during a home invasion in 2007. He was a beloved figure within the organization. Portis thought he would get a different treatment, but the organization, still ran by Dan Snyder, had different plans.
