Tershawn Wharton went through a lot to get where he is in life. Now, he has to do it without a valuable family member in his life.

On Sunday, Wharton took to social media to announce that his brother sadly took his own life, referring to his sibling as “DB” on his Instagram Story. Wharton, who won two Super Bowls in his five-year spell with the Chiefs, also urged others to check up on their loved ones.

“Good morning,” Wharton wrote. “On behalf of my family and my brother, I want to take a moment to give everyone some closure. My brother passed away by suicide. This is one of the toughest pills we’ve ever had to swallow. Right now, we are making arrangements, and I will share that information with those he loved.

“I also want to say this — check on your people. Check on your ‘strong’ friends, the ones who always show up, the ones who give the most and ask for nothing. Everyone who knew DB knows he had a smile so big and an even bigger heart. My family and I truly appreciate everyone who has been reaching out. But I’m going to be honest, we’re not okay. And this journey is just beginning. Mental health is real. Please understand it’s okay to talk to someone. 💯❤️”

Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton signed a three-year contract worth more than $54 million with the Carolina Panthers last offseason. He had seven sacks for the Chiefs during the 2024 season and graded out as one of the best pass-rushing defensive linemen.

Over five seasons, he recorded 13.5 sacks and 114 total tackles with the Chiefs. He was supposed to bring that same talent with him to Carolina. However, that is not what happened.

The Panthers did a lot right in the 2024 offseason, but signing Tershawn Wharton was not one of them. Wharton was shockingly bad. He had 25 total tackles, but only 2 sacks on the year.

PFF analyst Bradley Locker even stated it was the worst free agent acquisition the Panthers made ahead of the 2025 season. The 2026 season is a huge one for him going forward. Hopefully, he can play inspired football in his brother’s memory.
