The Cleveland Browns entered the offseason hoping for a fresh start after another disappointing season. Adding on to that, the team hired Todd Monken as head coach to replace Kevin Stefanski. But now, a single word from Monken has raised new questions about Myles Garrett’s future.

During a recent media session, a reporter asked Monken if he had met with Garrett yet. Monken simply replied, “No.”

NFL insider Ari Meirov shared the exchange on X, and it was quite surprising. Many thought the answer felt strange because Garrett remains the leader of Cleveland’s defense and one of the best players in the NFL.

The comment also added more attention to trade rumors that have followed Garrett in recent years. And it is now almost evident that there could be growing tension between Garrett and the organization behind the scenes.

Garrett signed a huge contract extension to stay with the Cleveland Browns last year, even though many people expected him to leave and join a contender. He chose long-term security and money instead of testing free agency. But the Browns have continued to struggle, and frustration around the team has not gone away.

Garrett still delivered another incredible season in 2025. He broke the NFL’s single-season sack record while Cleveland once again finished near the bottom of the standings. He carried the defense for most of the year while the offense struggled badly.

That is why Monken’s recent comment surprised so many fans. New head coaches usually make it a priority to connect early with their best players, and Garrett is clearly Cleveland’s biggest star.

Meanwhile, he has already met with quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson as the Browns prepare for a quarterback battle before training camp. Watson still has a massive contract, and reports say team ownership wants him to win back the starting job. Sanders also remains part of the competition.

So far, Garrett has not publicly responded to Monken’s comment. The Browns also have not indicated that they plan to trade him.
