Footage of Chris Johnson mentoring players at last year’s Senior Bowl has resurfaced online following the former running back’s heartbreaking revelation.
Johnson left the football community reeling on Monday, having disclosed an ALS diagnosis.
The former Tennessee Titans star remains one of the most iconic backs in NFL history, and the numbers tell the story.
Johnson rushed for 9,651 yards and 55 touchdowns in 10 years in the league. He added another 2,255 yards through the air.
He appeared on ‘Good Morning America’ with Michael Strahan on Monday morning, where he revealed he was diagnosed with ALS last year.
According to Johnson, doctors have determined his case as sporadic ALS, which is the most common form.
“There’s no history of ALS in my family,” he told Strahan. “My doctors believe my case is what’s called sporadic ALS, which is actually how the vast majority of ALS cases happen.”
ALS is progressive. It attacks nerve cells that control muscles. The condition became known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease after the baseball player’s diagnosis in 1939. As of 2026, there is no cure.
Johnson used a speech‑generating device during the interview. His announcement drew immediate reactions. Messages of support came from the Titans, Cardinals, Jets, and the NFL Players’ Association.

In the wake of his revelation, a video from last year’s Senior Bowl resurfaced. Johnson was shown speaking about his mentoring of young running backs. He offered guidance during drills and spoke with players on the sideline.
The clip has taken on new meaning in light of recent developments.
Johnson’s diagnosis adds his name to the list of athletes battling ALS. His path forward will be far tougher than anything he faced on the field.
The 40-year-old spent six years with the Titans, racking up 7,965 rushing yards and touchdowns. He recorded 2,006 yards in 2009, which cemented him as CJ2K
Johnson later spent time with the Jets in 2014 and the Cardinals from 2015 to 2017.
“Honestly, I don’t know if you ever fully process it,” he said in Monday’s interview. “At first, you’re in shock. Then you realize you have two choices. You can give up, or you can fight. I chose to fight.”
We at TPS wish him the best.
