Dianna Russini’s days as an NFL insider may be over. That doesn’t necessarily mean her sports media career is finished.

It’s been a little over two months since Russini resigned from The Athletic following the controversy surrounding photos of her and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort. The images sparked widespread scrutiny and ultimately led to her departure from the publication.

Russini defended her work and pointed to her track record covering the NFL as part of her statement when she announced her resignation

“I have broken stories, earned the trust of sources across the league, and been guided by the highest standards of professional conduct. That record speaks for itself,” she wrote.

Whether she returns as a reporter remains to be seen.

According to Awful Announcing, a comeback as an on-air personality or opinion host could be a much more realistic path.

The outlet noted that many former reporters have successfully transitioned into debate shows, podcasts and opinion-based programming.

Rather than chasing breaking news, Russini could simply lean into analysis and commentary. Before that happens, however, Awful Announcing believes she’ll eventually need to publicly address the controversy before moving into her next role.

There may already be interested employers.

Dave Portnoy recently said he’d have no problem hiring Russini if she wanted to join Barstool Sports.

“No-brainer, if she wanted to work here, we’d do it,” Portnoy told Us Weekly last month.

Portnoy also said he doesn’t believe the controversy should permanently end Russini’s career.

“An affair is not like a murder,” he said. “She’ll land somewhere.”

His comments came after Jon “Stugotz” Weiner also expressed interest in bringing Russini aboard, adding another potential landing spot if she decides to return to sports media.

For now, Russini has remained largely out of the spotlight since leaving The Athletic. But with prominent media figures already publicly backing her, it appears the door to another broadcasting opportunity may still be open.
