Jay-Z has sparked fresh drama after appearing to reference Colin Kaepernick during a freestyle at Yankee Stadium.
The rap icon, real name Shawn Carter, performed the verse during the opening night of his three-show residency celebrating the anniversaries of ‘Reasonable Doubt’ and ‘The Blueprint’.
One line quickly caught the attention of NFL fans.
“You picking and choosing the politicking as usual, they digging deep for narratives, it’s embarrassing, they running outta characters, had to bring back up Kaep again,” Jay-Z rapped.
What Was Jay-Z Implying Here?

Many listeners interpreted the lyric as a response to ongoing criticism of Carter’s partnership with the NFL through Roc Nation.
NFL insider Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports noted that the lyric also appeared to reference Kaepernick’s confidential 2019 settlement with the league.
“In a freestyle last night, Jay Z says Colin Kaepernick signed an NDA with the NFL in his 2019 confidential settlement with the league. Jay Z partners with the league as the official live music entertainment strategist through Roc Nation,” Jones wrote.
Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL after alleging that team owners colluded to keep him out of the league following his national anthem protests. The two sides reached a confidential settlement in 2019, and the financial terms were never disclosed.
Carter partnered with the NFL later that year through Roc Nation. His company has since helped produce the Super Bowl halftime show while also advising the league on entertainment and social justice initiatives.
