A longtime San Francisco 49ers contributor recently shared his honest thoughts on a long-standing issue. Kyle Juszczyk made it clear that his classification works against him financially. He explained the frustrating dynamic in simple terms.

He highlighted how his unique skill set creates a mismatch between game-day duties and paycheck reality. The comments quickly gained traction among fans and analysts.

The 13-year veteran lines up all over the formation. Snap counts show him in the backfield, inline, in the slot, and even out wide.

Juszczyk has earned multiple Pro Bowl nods and All-Pro honors at fullback. Yet he often performs tasks typically reserved for tight ends. He attended Tight End University this offseason as an honorary guest. Travis Kelce even asked him to teach a class on fullback techniques. Many modern tight ends now take snaps in the backfield.

“Am I a tight end? Am I not a tight end? I don’t know. That’s a great question,” Juszczyk said recently from the 2026 American Century Championship golf event in an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. “Unfortunately, I think I’m a tight end and not a tight end at all the wrong times. I’m a fullback when it comes to contract negotiations, which hurts, but then I’m a tight end on game day.”

His current deal ranks among the top at the fullback position. Still, the numbers lag far behind what starting tight ends earn league-wide. Teammate George Kittle’s contract dwarfs his own by a wide margin. Other 49ers tight ends also out-earn him on a yearly basis. The gap fuels his desire for better recognition.

Kyle Juszczyk enters the final year of his latest contract with the 49ers. He re-signed after a brief free-agency stint last offseason. The two-year agreement kept him in San Francisco through 2026. Now he prepares for another campaign while eyeing his next opportunity. He plans to negotiate as a fullback once free agency arrives again.

The veteran remains a key piece in the 49ers’ offense. He blocks effectively for star runners and contributes as a receiver. His versatility gives coaches flexibility in personnel packages. Fans appreciate the high-effort style that has defined his career.

As training camp nears, the focus stays on performance rather than labels, since the 49ers rely on his toughness and football IQ. Whether future deals reflect his full impact remains an open question. For now, the veteran keeps producing at a high level on every snap.

The conversation underscores how position designations still influence NFL salaries. Players who excel in multiple roles sometimes fall into a compensation gray area. Kyle Juszczyk brings attention to that reality with candor and experience.
