Diego Pavia Already Has A Landing Spot Lined Up After Ravens Release

Diego Pavia’s path to the NFL just hit a major roadblock, but his football career isn’t necessarily over.
The Baltimore Ravens waived the rookie quarterback this week, just days before the start of training camp. Pavia had gone undrafted back in April despite finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist during his final season at Vanderbilt, later signing with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent in hopes of carving out a roster spot.

Pavia put together a strong senior campaign at Vanderbilt, completing 70.6% of his passes for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns while adding 862 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground. Even with that production, questions about his size and overall fit at the next level followed him throughout the pre-draft process.
Ravens head coach Jesse Minter didn’t rip into Pavia’s release, instead framing it as part of a normal development curve.
“He’s had some experiences that are learning experiences that he could learn from and be better from. I don’t think anybody would dispute that,” Minter told ESPN. “But when you talk to the people inside that building and what he’s about as a player, he is showing up early every day and working really hard.” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first to report the move.

With NFL opportunities drying up quickly this close to camp, attention has already turned to whether Pavia looks north for his next shot. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers reportedly hold him on their negotiation list in the CFL, a detail that resurfaced almost immediately after his release.
TSN’s Coty Wiles noted that while Winnipeg already carries three other quarterbacks, starter Zach Collaros’ recent trip to injured reserve could open a door.

Reaction online has been mixed, with some fans pointing to Pavia’s college controversies, including his infamous reaction to losing the Heisman vote to Fernando Mendoza, as evidence his personality may have played a role in how his pro process has unfolded. Others have simply chalked his release up to a numbers game, especially after Pavia chose to represent himself without an agent heading into this stage of his career.
For now, Pavia remains unsigned, and it’s unclear whether another NFL team will take a flier on him before camps open. If not, the CFL may end up being the place where his professional football story continues.
