Jimmy Garoppolo Gets Shocking Retirement Update Ahead Of 2026 Season

Jimmy Garoppolo will not step away from football just yet. The two-time Super Bowl champion reportedly considered retirement earlier this offseason after going unsigned in free agency. That led many people to wonder if he had already played his final NFL game.

Now, that no longer seems to be the case.

According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, Garoppolo still wants to keep playing and is waiting for the right opportunity. Although no team has signed him yet, the 34-year-old is expected to return if the right situation comes along.

Jimmy Garoppolo Waits For The Right Opportunity

Garoppolo spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams as Matthew Stafford’s backup. After the season ended, he became a free agent and has remained unsigned throughout the offseason.

According to Mike Garafolo, Garoppolo is still waiting for the right opportunity. He said a quarterback injury somewhere around the league could create an opening, but until then, teams appear willing to wait.

One team that could still bring him back is the Rams. Los Angeles recently drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, who joins Stafford and Stetson Bennett in the quarterback room. Even so, NFL Network reported that Rams coach Sean McVay would be open to re-signing Garoppolo because of his experience and reliability behind Stafford.

The Arizona Cardinals have also been linked to Garoppolo in recent months. Reports suggested he could compete with Jacoby Brissett for a roster spot, but no deal has been reached.

Garoppolo has plenty of NFL experience. He has played in 85 games, started 64, and posted a 43-21 record as a starter. Most of his success came with the San Francisco 49ers, where he helped lead the team to Super Bowl LIV.

Over his career, Garoppolo has thrown for 15,828 yards, 96 touchdowns, and 52 interceptions. He also won two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots while serving as Tom Brady’s backup.

For now, Garoppolo is staying patient.
