Travis Kelce has not announced any plans to retire after the 2026 NFL season. But one social media post from a close friend has worried everyone about his future.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has been focused on getting ready for another NFL season. After marrying Taylor Swift earlier this month at Madison Square Garden in New York, Kelce has turned his attention back to football. The Chiefs will open their season against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
This week, former NFL star Cris Carter posted a photo with Kelce and longtime trainer Andrew Spruill on Instagram. Carter’s caption hinted that Kelce may already know when he wants to retire.
Fans Question Carter’s Retirement Claim
Carter wrote, “Andrew and I started with Travis before his rookie year in the NFL. Know the goat is preparing for THE LAST DANCE. Next stop Canton/HOF.”
According to this post, the upcoming season could mark the end of Kelce’s career. Kelce, however, has not confirmed that claim.
Many fans also criticized Carter for making the comment before Kelce said anything himself.
“These guys have no respect or loyalty to Travis at all they’re just trying to get clout,” one fan wrote in the comments.
Another fan added, “So messy and inappropriate imo for him to write that. It’s NO ONE’S right to say that but Travis’ and now isn’t the time.”
A third comment had the same feeling. “Can Travis be allowed to announce his own retirement, please? Everything about him makes headlines. Are you saying this for attention? He’s always said he doesn’t want a farewell tour or the focus to be on him during the season. Travis has earned the right to announce this himself when he sees fit.”
Kelce faced plenty of retirement rumors after last season. Instead of calling it a career, he decided to return for another year with the Chiefs. He also signed a new contract in March worth about $12 million.
With training camp about to begin, Kelce seems focused on football, not retirement. The Chiefs’ rookies report this week, while Kelce and the others will arrive next week to start preparing for the new season.
For now, Carter’s Instagram post is the only thing that’s making the retirement relevant. Until Kelce says something himself, fans will have to wait and see whether this really is his “last dance.”
