Arizona Cardinals Tight End Forced To Medically Retire At Just 28 In Heartbreaking Turn Of Events

Travis Vokolek has called time on his NFL career after doctors told him to stop playing because of a serious neck injury. The Arizona Cardinals tight end shared the news on Instagram on Wednesday, bringing his football career to an end at just 28 years old.
Vokolek said he spent the last few months meeting with doctors and neurologists before making the difficult decision. He thanked everyone who supported him throughout his football journey and said he was grateful to have lived his dream of playing in the NFL for three seasons.
He suffered the injury during the Cardinals’ game against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 10 last season. Vokolek was blocking on a kickoff when he landed awkwardly after colliding with a Colts player. Medical staff rushed onto the field, placed him on a stretcher, and he did not return to the game.
Vokolek Thanks Family And Cardinals After Difficult Decision
In his retirement message, Vokolek explained why he had no choice but to walk away from football.
“After numerous visits with doctors and neurologists over the past couple of months, I have been advised to medically retire from the NFL due to a serious neck injury that I suffered this past season,” Vokolek wrote.

He also reflected on what football gave him during his career.
“I am extremely grateful and blessed to have been able to live out my childhood dream of playing football at the highest level for the past three years. Football has taught me many life lessons and given me unforgettable memories.”
Vokolek thanked his teammates, coaches, trainers, and the Arizona Cardinals organization. He gave special praise to the Cardinals’ training staff for the care they provided him and his family after the injury.
He also shared a heartfelt message for his wife, Ann-Marie James Vokolek, whom he married in July 2024.
“I am especially grateful for my wife who has been there the whole time through the many ups and downs of the NFL. She has never wavered and has been extremely supportive through it all.”
Vokolek ended his message by saying he gave everything he had to football.
The Missouri native entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent after playing at Nebraska. He first signed with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the Cardinals for his rookie season in 2023.
Actually, Vokolek played only in eight NFL games during his career. Last season, he appeared in five games, started one, and recorded two solo tackles.
