49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Involved In Serious Car Accident, Will Miss Start Of 2026 Season With “Significant Injuries”

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered multiple injuries in a serious car accident earlier this month. 

The crash has left him limited as the team opens training camp. While Shanahan is expected to remain involved with the team, his recovery will temporarily reduce his on-field workload.

ESPN‘s Adam Schefter reports that Shanahan suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion and required more than 40 stitches to his face following a July 14 collision with an SUV near his Northern California home. 

Schefter added that paramedics transported Shanahan to a local hospital, where doctors treated him before releasing him later that day.

Kyle Shanahan Cedes Duties To Assistant And Coordinators

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs contributed to the crash. Authorities also confirmed that neither driver received a citation. The other driver did not suffer injuries, according to reports.

The 49ers announced that assistant head coach Chris Foerster will oversee many of Shanahan’s practice responsibilities while he recovers. Team coordinators are also expected to take on additional duties during the opening days of camp. 

San Francisco begins preparations for the 2026 NFL season this week after another playoff appearance ended short of a championship.
