Sean McVay didn’t wait long to speak up about Kyle Shanahan’s car accident. The Rams coach addressed the crash directly when reporters asked him about it. Shanahan suffered serious injuries after colliding with an SUV near his California home. The crash happened July 14, just days before 49ers training camp opened. McVay’s response focused less on football and more on Shanahan the person.

McVay and Shanahan have coached against each other for years. Their teams have battled in some of the NFC’s biggest games.

Despite the rivalry, McVay’s message carried real warmth and respect. He called Shanahan “a stud” and said the two remain close friends.

“Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is okay,” McVay said. “Perspective is everything. We talk about that all the time as coaches, and everybody goes through different things.

“I think the most important thing is that he’s on the road to recovery. His wife Mandy, and he’s got a beautiful family, and I think any time that something like that happens, it shakes you up a little bit.

“But most importantly, I have talked to him. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and I know he’s got an incredible perspective on it all. And Kyle’s a stud. I have as much respect for him as anybody and he’s a friend of mine, and I love him and hope that he’s going to have a great recovery.”

The two have met in the playoffs multiple times over the past decade. Their games have decided division titles and conference championship berths. None of that history stopped McVay from speaking with genuine concern.

San Francisco already posted its own update on the crash shortly after the news broke.

ESPN reported that Shanahan suffered a broken nose, three ribs, and a broken hand. He also needed more than 40 stitches and is dealing with a concussion. The team says none of the injuries are life-threatening. Shanahan will have a limited role at training camp while he heals.

John Lynch, the team’s general manager, echoed a similar message of caution and care. Lynch said doctors, not coaches, will decide when Shanahan returns to full duty. The team wants him back at full strength, but only when he’s truly ready.

McVay’s comments reflect how coaches around the league are viewing this moment. Wins and losses can wait when a colleague’s health is on the line. For now, the focus stays on Shanahan’s recovery, not football. McVay’s words made that priority clear for everyone watching.
