Kyle Shanahan Reportedly Almost Lost His Eye In Near-Fatal Car Accident — New Details Emerge

New details have emerged regarding San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s frightening car accident. And they paint a picture even more serious than the team initially disclosed.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news of Shanahan’s car accident on Saturday, almost two weeks after it happened.

Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, one of Shanahan’s longtime friends, has since brought additional details to light, disclosing that Shanahan came dangerously close to losing his right eye in the July 14 crash.

“He was this close to maybe losing his right eye, right? The scar is so big right here. And so all that stuff was just crazy to see,” he said during an appearance on Pro Football Talk.

The 49ers announced over the weekend that Shanahan suffered non-life-threatening injuries and will participate in training camp on a limited basis while he continues recovering.

According to Simms, Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, contacted him shortly after the crash and shared photos of the injuries. Simms said the images were “jarring” and underscored the severity of the accident. He also said Shanahan continues dealing with lingering concussion symptoms.

The team has confirmed Shanahan suffered a severe concussion, a broken nose, three fractured ribs, a broken left hand and facial lacerations that required more than 40 stitches. He was treated at a local hospital and later released. Police said neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash, and the other driver was not injured.

General manager John Lynch has said Shanahan will follow a recovery plan similar to the concussion protocol used for players. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team’s coordinators have handled practice responsibilities while Shanahan gradually returns to full duties.
