New York Giants Send Superstar Playmaker To New England Patriots In Blockbuster Trade Proposal From ESPN

With the 2026 NFL regular season about a month away, teams are putting the final touches on their rosters before Week 1. Most training camp moves are just about depth, but ESPN analyst Seth Walder thinks a bigger deal could go down.
In a recent ESPN article, Walder tossed out a few trade ideas, but one really looked interesting, the New York Giants trading pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux to the New England Patriots.
The move makes sense timing-wise. Thibodeaux is entering the final year of his contract, playing on a $14.75 million fifth-year option before heading into free agency. According to Walder, the Giants might no longer see the former No. 5 overall pick as part of their long-term future.
Why ESPN Sees A Potential Deal
Walder pointed to the Giants’ growing depth at edge rusher. Brian Burns and Abdul Carter already occupy top roles, while first-round pick Arvell Reese brings another option who can line up at linebacker and edge.
“Thibodeaux is playing on his $14.75 million fifth-year option and is set to be a free agent at the end of this season,” Walder wrote. “To keep Thibodeaux around at this price to potentially be the team’s No. 4 edge rusher isn’t ideal.”

Walder also believes the Patriots could benefit from adding a younger pass rusher.
“Thibodeaux offers long-term upside if New England decides to re-sign him,” he wrote.
New England is currently relying on Harold Landry III and Dre’Mont Jones off the edge, but Walder believes both work better as solid helpers than primary pass rushers.
In Walder’s proposed deal, the Giants would send Thibodeaux and a fifth-round pick to New England for a 2027 third-rounder.
Moreover, Walder also noted, “Giants fans will likely feel like the team should get more in this deal. But it’s all about the contract, as Thibodeaux has only one year left on his deal and is getting paid pretty close to what he would probably make on the open market.”
Thibodeaux came into the league with huge hype out of Oregon and delivered early, racking up 15.5 sacks in his first two years with the Giants.
Since then, his numbers have dropped. A shoulder injury held him to just 10 games and a career-low 2.5 sacks in 2025.
If the Giants don’t plan to re-sign Thibodeaux, trading him before Week 1 gives them their best shot at getting something in return.
