Alvin Kamara left Tuesday’s joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys after a knee injury. Tests confirmed a sprained MCL. He avoided any torn ligaments according to early reports.

The veteran running back will miss at least the next month. That timeline puts his availability for the September 13 season opener in doubt. The Saints open against the Detroit Lions.

Kamara reworked his contract this offseason to stay in New Orleans. He accepted a reduced role to serve as the backup after the NFC South franchise brought in Travis Etienne to lead the backfield.

This latest setback continues a stretch of injury problems for the 31-year-old. He posted career lows in rushing and receiving last season while dealing with knee and ankle issues.

Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the one-month absence. Multiple sources confirmed the MCL sprain diagnosis. Nick Underhill noted that Kamara did not suffer major structural damage.

The Saints already deal with other backfield injuries. Audric Estime remains sidelined. Kendre Miller and Devin Neal recently returned to practice after missing time.

Etienne will now face no real competition for early touches. The Saints planned a tandem approach between the two backs. That plan shifts with Kamara’s multi-week recovery.

Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the knee injury after practice. Additionally, cornerback Quincy Riley left early with a separate issue. The team holds another joint session with the Rams on Thursday.

Kamara remains the franchise’s all-time leading rusher. He has spent his entire NFL career in New Orleans since the 2017 draft. Five Pro Bowl selections highlight his early peak years.

He has not earned a Pro Bowl nod since 2021. Age and injuries have slowed his production. The reworked deal reflected the team’s desire to keep him as a complementary piece.

Fantasy managers and Saints fans now wait for clearer return updates. A full month on the shelf would cost him the rest of the preseason. Opening the season on injured reserve remains a possible option.

The Saints hope the sprain heals cleanly without setbacks. Etienne’s presence gives the offense a proven starter in the meantime. Younger backs will receive extra practice reps while Kamara recovers.

This injury adds another layer of uncertainty to the Saints’ running game plans. Kamara’s history of durability issues makes the recovery process even more important.
