Philadelphia Eagles rookie tight end Eli Stowers has started to feel the NFL heat, even though he has yet to play a regular-season game.

People were already worried about his slow start to camp, and things only got worse during this week’s joint practices with the New England Patriots. Video clips made rounds online showing him struggling badly in one-on-one drills against Patriots safeties.

Fans wasted no time jumping on social media. Some were already calling the second-round pick a bust, while others wondered if he’d even make the roster if he weren’t a high draft pick.

Still, panicking this early might be taking things a bit too far.

Stowers had many tough moments during Thursday’s practice. Patriots defensive back Mike Brown redirected him on a route and forced an incompletion in the end zone. Stowers also struggled to separate from veteran safety Kevin Byard.

Brown later covered Stowers again on an in-breaking route with Andy Dalton at quarterback. Near the end of the period, Stowers also dropped a pass from Jalen Hurts while rookie safety Peter Manuma covered him.

Those clips just made fans angry.

One fan wrote, “It’s early…But Eli Stowers has been a DISASTER for the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Another fan went even further, saying, “I truly think he would be cut before the start of the season if he wasn’t a 2nd-round pick.”

A third simply wrote, “It’s just getting worse…”

Stowers has struggled as both a blocker and a pass catcher throughout the summer. He also has worked with the second and third-team offenses. That suggests the Eagles do not see him as ready for a major role yet.

But his background gives the situation more context.

Stowers only switched from quarterback to tight end in 2023. He played quarterback throughout his early career, including his first two college seasons at Texas A&M.

He made a huge jump in 2025. Stowers caught 62 passes for 769 yards and four touchdowns at Vanderbilt. He also won the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end.

The Eagles drafted him as a long-term project. His athletic ability remains evident, even if it has not yet translated consistently.

Stowers has time to adjust. Writing him off before his first NFL game looks premature.
