The Eagles and Patriots met Saturday for their second preseason matchup in less than a week. The game had barely started before a scary moment stopped everything in its tracks.

Running back Ja’Quinden Jackson suffered a scary head injury during the opening kickoff at Gillette Stadium, getting knocked out cold.

Medical staff rushed to attend to him on the field. They loaded him into an ambulance and drove him off the turf.

The Eagles released a statement shortly after. “Ja’Quinden Jackson has strength and movement in all extremities,” the team said. The Eagles added that they’re taking him to the hospital for further evaluation.

The Injury Comes During A Crowded Roster Battle

Jackson, 24, signed with Philadelphia on Aug. 10 after a winding path through the league. He went undrafted in 2025. Jacksonville then added him to its practice squad, but the Jaguars waived him in May.

He rushed for 2,148 yards and scored 29 touchdowns across four college seasons split between Utah and Arkansas.

He entered this preseason fighting for a roster spot in a crowded Eagles backfield. Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby look like locks to make the team.

Will Shipley appears likely to grab a third spot as well. That leaves Jackson competing with players like Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele for whatever room remains on the 53-man roster or practice squad.

Saturday’s game marked the second meeting between these two teams this week. The Eagles and Patriots ran joint practices in Foxborough ahead of Wednesday and Thursday’s sessions, and those practices generated their own storylines.

A.J. Brown made a tense return to face his former team following his June trade to New England. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel also clashed with Eagles pass rusher Jalyx Hunt during one of the sessions.

Jackson’s injury adds to a summer that’s already tested Philadelphia’s depth. Rookie offensive lineman Jaeden Roberts left training camp on a cart after his own injury scare weeks earlier. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith has also managed a hamstring issue heading into the season.

Both situations carried less concern than Saturday’s scare involving Jackson.

The Eagles haven’t provided a further update on Jackson’s condition since their earlier announcement. They’ve confirmed only that he retained movement in all extremities, a positive early sign.

Philadelphia continues its preseason slate with one more tune-up game before making final roster decisions ahead of the regular season.
