Chargers practices rarely draw much drama outside the usual training camp battles. Reporters and photographers roam the sidelines every day, documenting position drills and depth chart shuffles.

Justin Herbert has grown used to that constant presence throughout his six seasons in Los Angeles. Cameras track his every dropback, especially with the regular season now just days away.

Monday’s session looked routine until one moment nearly turned into a real problem, however. Herbert was working through a dropback drill when a photographer sprinted directly into his path.

The Two Narrowly Avoided A Serious Collision

Video captured by ESPN‘s Kris Rhim showed Herbert planting his feet just in time to avoid the oncoming photographer. The two came within inches of colliding at full speed, a scenario that could have ended badly for both parties.

Herbert has already dealt with real injury concerns over the past year, including a broken hand suffered in Week 13 last season that limited him down the stretch. Any additional physical setback this close to Week 1 would have been a significant blow to the Chargers’ plans.

Fans offered reactions once the clip started circulating online.

“Now I get why he be shoving cameramen out the way when he’s running onto the field,” one wrote.

“This should never happen at the NFL level. Everyone in the building understands the value of your starting QB. Come on man, tighten up,” another user added.

“Welp that’s one way to lose your job,” a third fan wrote.

This Isn’t Herbert’s First Run-In With A Camera

This isn’t the first time Herbert has found himself tangled up with sideline media.

He actually collided with a cameraman during a practice last September, an incident that drew similar criticism from fans at the time.

The Chargers have otherwise kept things relatively lighthearted around Herbert this preseason. The team recently signed his younger brother Patrick off waivers, reuniting the two for the first time since their Oregon days.

Herbert has also been spotted enjoying lighter moments with fiancée Madison Beer around the practice facility this summer.

None of that changes how close Monday’s moment came to becoming a real story. With the Chargers opening their season in a matter of days, both the team and its cameramen will want to keep a little more distance during drills from now on.
