O.J. Simpson spent much of the 2000s trying to rebuild his public image. One project from that era barely saw the light of day.

That project resurfaces this week in a new docuseries. The timing couldn’t be more pointed, given everything that followed its production.

‘O.J. Unseen: Exploitation of Evil’ premieres Monday on Investigation Discovery, chronicling the making of ‘Juiced’ Simpson’s pay-per-view prank show from 2006. The special never gained much traction, but the footage behind it apparently captured more than jokes.

A Producer Says He Saw Real Anger During Filming

Todd Lewis directed and produced ‘Juiced’, and he recalls one moment that turned genuinely tense. During filming, Simpson accused Lewis of racism, a claim Lewis says caught him off guard.

Lewis said he tried to defuse the situation quickly. He worried that pushing back too hard might provoke an unpredictable reaction from Simpson. Eventually, the two men were locked in a real argument, not a scripted one.

“I looked at him and saw anger in his eyes,” Lewis says in the docuseries trailer, describing a moment where he genuinely didn’t know what might happen next.

‘Juiced’ featured Simpson pulling off stunts that seem almost unthinkable in hindsight. He posed as a car salesman trying to unload a white Bronco, dressed as an Elvis impersonator, and staged a fake affair with someone’s girlfriend. Reviving Simpson’s public persona clearly took priority over subtlety.

The show’s release predated one of the darker chapters of Simpson’s post-trial life. Authorities arrested him the following year and charged him with armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas.

Simpson’s Legacy Continues Sparking Debate Years After His Death

Simpson’s complicated legacy has remained a talking point across sports and entertainment circles since his death in 2024. The Buffalo Bills recently excluded Simpson from their new Highmark Stadium legends display, despite his franchise-record rushing seasons.

Old media artifacts tied to Simpson have also kept resurfacing, including a decades-old magazine cover that recently went viral for entirely different reasons.

‘O.J. Unseen: Exploitation of Evil’ premieres Monday, September 7, on ID, with new episodes continuing the following night. Viewers can also stream the docuseries on HBO Max starting Tuesday.

Whatever “Juiced” was meant to accomplish for Simpson’s image, this new look behind the curtain tells a very different story.
