Super Bowl halftime speculation has become its own offseason sport. Betting favorites emerge within days of the previous show ending, long before any official decision gets made.

That speculation reached a new level this weekend. A post claiming to reveal next year’s headliner spread across social media within minutes, racking up millions of views and thousands of shares before anyone stopped to check it.

The post in question named Miley Cyrus as the “officially announced” headliner for Super Bowl LXI’s Apple Music halftime show. Nothing about that announcement turned out to be true.

The Post Spread Fast Before Anyone Fact-Checked It

Acc account going by Pop Base Updates first shared the claim, immediately drawing pushback in the replies.

That didn’t stop the story from spreading further, though. Daily Loud reposted the same claim shortly afterward, helping push it even further across timelines before quietly deleting their post.

The artist at the center of the rumor, Miley Cyrus, has actually been the betting favorite to headline the show for months.

She’s previously addressed the rumors directly, telling Variety back in March that the pressure of headlining “feels like too much.” The existing buzz likely made the fake announcement feel more believable than it should have.
