NBC Changed The Iconic Sunday Night Football Theme & Fans Absolutely Hate It

Carrie Underwood came back for her 14th year in a row as the face of NBC’s Sunday Night Football. But her return came with a major change that annoyed NFL fans even more, especially since many of them weren’t happy with her in the first place.

Before the New York Giants played the Dallas Cowboys, Underwood rolled out a brand-new version of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.” NBC traded the familiar tune for a much heavier, rock-style track. The song originally drew inspiration from Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

Underwood said she loved the switch, calling it part of her “ongoing rock star fever dream” and giving big props to the crew that put it together.

Fans watching at home, though? They weren’t feeling it at all.

Social media users criticized the new theme after its debut. Some fans questioned why NBC changed a version that had worked for years.

“Is the worst version of the SNF theme. Seriously, why would you replace what you had the last? This version just seems like empty and shallow. Last year had energy and got you pumped up for the game. This is trash,” one fan wrote on X.

Another viewer compared Underwood’s vocals to a banshee.

“I’ve often wondered what the shriek of a banshee would sound like if it were real, then I heard Carrie Underwood sing the Sunday Night Football song, and it was probably just like that,” the fan posted.

Others focused on the sound mix. One viewer said, “I’m glad Carrie Underwood gets paid a ton of money to sing the Sunday Night Football theme song because you couldn’t understand or hear one note she sang.”

The music played right before the Giants beat the Cowboys 28-20 at MetLife Stadium.

There was also a really special moment before the start. A five-member NYPD-FDNY group performed the national anthem a cappella as the Giants honored the victims of 9/11.

The crowd absolutely loved it.
