The NFL season opener still cleared 25 million viewers. That number would crush almost any other show on television. It still marked a four-year low for Kickoff night.

NBC and Peacock averaged 25.1 million for Wednesday’s Patriots-Seahawks rematch. Last year’s Cowboys-Eagles opener pulled 28.3 million. That is a 12 percent drop, becoming the weakest regular-season opener since 2022.

The product on the field did not help. Seattle won 13-10 in a slog. Sam Darnold left after six plays with a hip injury. For the Patriots, Drake Maye threw three interceptions and A.J. Brown also went down.

Viewership still peaked at 27.4 million between 9 and 9:15 p.m. ET. The 18-49 demo hit a five-year high for an opener. The league also topped 25 million for a fourth straight Kickoff game.

The league moved Kickoff to Wednesday for only the second time. The other Wednesday opener came in 2012. This game beat that old mark by about five percent. It still lagged recent Thursday openers that featured the Chiefs or Cowboys.

The data split in two directions. Total viewers fell, but younger viewers showed up. The NFL remains the biggest draw in American TV. Only last year’s World Series Game 7 topped this Kickoff audience among recent sports events.

Nielsen also changed how it counts people this year. The company now mixes device data with traditional household panels. That shift started two weeks before the NFL season opener and left the league uneasy.

NFL head of data and analytics Paul Ballew addressed the change last month.

“We don’t have enough impact data to fully assess,” Ballew said. “We’re still trying to make sense of it. We’re still trying to make sense of some of the logic behind some of the methodological changes.”

He added more blunt language.

“From our initial impact, it looks like a negative for sports,” Ballew said. “On the other side, co-viewing or partial co-viewing implementation is a positive.”

He also called the rollout “a misstep on Nielsen’s part.”

The broadcast itself drew heat. Viewers ripped Cris Collinsworth on the NBC call for talking through the Darnold injury and recycling Super Bowl points. New England’s night got worse when A.J. Brown left with an ankle injury.

The NFL season opener still beat almost everything else on TV. It did not beat last year’s Kickoff. A Wednesday Super Bowl rematch, a low-scoring game, and a new Nielsen formula all landed in the same week. The 25.1 million number is huge. The year-over-year drop is the story.
