John Harbaugh isn’t hiding from the Giants’ quarterback problem anymore. He’s addressing it head-on.
New York’s first-year head coach confirmed on Wednesday that the front office plans to bring in outside help at quarterback, and he isn’t ruling out any direction. The admission comes days after New York lost its starter to a serious injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season.
Jaxson Dart went down during Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and what first looked manageable turned into much more once doctors reviewed his knee. Further testing revealed damage to his MCL, PCL and meniscus, pushing New York into 2026 without its franchise quarterback.
Harbaugh Signals Openness To Outside Help
Harbaugh addressed the situation directly when asked whether the Giants would consider signing a veteran passer.
“We will,” Harbaugh said, via video from SNY Giants. “We plan on doing that, absolutely. Can’t say who at this point. We’re working on that.”
The video shows Harbaugh fielding the question calmly, choosing his words carefully while still confirming the search is already underway. He followed up on the idea again later, leaving little doubt about the franchise’s intentions.
“All options are open,” Harbaugh said, via Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
For now, Jameis Winston takes over as the starter, and Harbaugh has publicly backed him to handle the job. Winston struggled in his first outing under center, completing just 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards without a touchdown.
“Jameis is one of our guys who obviously is here for a reason,” Harbaugh said postgame. “He’s a very good football player.”
Veteran Names Continue Circulating Around New York
Speculation around potential additions hasn’t slowed down. Reports have connected New York to a mix of experienced arms, including a possible reunion between Harbaugh and Joe Flacco, who won a Super Bowl under him in Baltimore.
Jimmy Garoppolo has also surfaced in the conversation, though his market status remains uncertain since retirement has crossed his mind. Minnesota’s J.J. McCarthy represents another name worth watching, especially with reports suggesting the Vikings could move him at a discounted price this season.
None of it is settled yet, and Harbaugh made clear the Giants aren’t rushing the process. New York returns to action Sunday against the Titans, still searching for its long-term answer at the position.
