Kansas City Chiefs’ Offense Dealt Major Truth Bomb Following Hot Start To 2026 Season

Two games in, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense has looked different. Coach Andy Reid has centered his team’s offense around the rushing attack. 

It’s quite understandable why they have gone down that route. Patrick Mahomes just returned from a brutal ACL and LCL injury late last year. While he reportedly said that he ‘felt good’ since his on-field return, they still want to ease him whenever they can.

Plus, they signed Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III to a three-year deal in the offseason. As expected, the famed running back has become a workhorse for the Chiefs through the team’s first two contests.

Not Everyone Is Sold On Chiefs’ Offense

But despite their 2-0 start, not everybody is sold on the Chiefs’ offensive schemes. In a new report, ESPN asked each of its 32 team reporters about which franchise has surprised them early in the 2026 season.

It is further noted that they also asked each one whether the early-season surprise was sustainable. Kansas City Chiefs insider Nate Taylor wasn’t too thrilled with his response. 

While Taylor noted that Kenneth Walker III is as good as advertised, he was quick to say that the team’s offense cannot keep this up.

“Mirage. It’s understandable why coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy wanted to put the ball in Walker’s hands early and often. Of course, Patrick Mahomes was returning from torn ligaments in his left knee, and undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson started at left tackle with Josh Simmons out because of a lower back injury,” Taylor wrote in his response.

“Walker, though, shouldn’t continue to have 26 to 30 touches every game. The Chiefs also should give more opportunities to rookie Emmett Johnson, who has been productive in his limited carries,” he added.

He may not be too far with assessment, though.

Andy Reid Plans To Tone Down Kenneth Walker III’s Role

After Week 2, Walker leads the league in both carries and rushing yards. But can he sustain this for the rest of the season? Sure enough, injury concerns may have already crept into the minds of the Chiefs, especially coach Reid.

And he recently admitted that Emmett Johnson, a fifth-round selection of April’s draft, might get more opportunities moving forward.

The rookie has played well in limited snaps so far for Kansas City. Furthermore, the team may want to preserve Walker as they vie for a deep run this year.
