Jameis Winston and Cam Skattebo haven’t played together much in the Giants’ backfield, and you could tell early on Sunday against the Titans at MetLife Stadium.

The two had a clumsy mix-up on a first-quarter handoff right near their own goal line. Winston bumped into Skattebo as he tried to hand the ball off, sending the running back tumbling to the turf. Luckily, Skattebo went down just in time to avoid getting tackled into the end zone for a safety.

The Giants also avoided a much bigger problem when Skattebo managed to hold on tight to the football through the hit. The wind and mist made conditions difficult in New Jersey, so any loose ball could have created trouble for the Giants.

Winston And Skattebo Find Their Rhythm

Winston started the game after Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury against the Los Angeles Rams last week. The injury ruled Dart out for the rest of the regular season and forced the Giants to turn to Winston.

The veteran quarterback also started two games for New York last season. Skattebo did not play in either of those games because of an injury.

That meant Sunday marked one of the first chances for Winston and Skattebo to work together in a game.

The two made up for the mistake pretty quickly in the passing game. On the Giants’ very next drive, Winston hit Skattebo for a 30-yard catch. That big play pushed New York downfield and set up an easy field goal.

Still, Skattebo’s main job is running the ball. The second-year back loves dishing out hits, but that early handoff mess showed that he and Winston clearly need more practice reps together.

If Winston struggles again as he did against the Rams in Week 2, the push for a new quarterback could be significant. So, New York just called up Jake Haener from the practice squad on Saturday to back Winston up against Tennessee.

The Giants have to clean up the timing between their quarterback and running back while they figure out life without Dart.
