The NFL has suspended 49ers owner Jed York for six regular-season games and handed him a $500,000 fine for breaking the league’s personal conduct rules.

The punishment comes after the NFL spent over a month looking into York’s August arrest in Ohio. Police took him in after a sting on a prostitution website, where he allegedly tried to set up a meetup for $140.

York was originally charged with prostitution following his August 23 arrest in East Palestine, Ohio, but prosecutors later dropped that down to disorderly conduct.

York ultimately pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. The second charge involved his use of a cellphone to respond to an undercover ad.

A judge sentenced him to one day behind bars, gave him credit for the time he had already served, and ordered him to pay $1,150 in fines.

However, the criminal case did not end the matter for the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would review York’s conduct under its Personal Conduct Policy. The policy applies to owners, players, coaches, and other league personnel.

The NFL has now completed that review and handed York the suspension and huge fine.

York accepted the punishment in a statement.

“Today, the NFL concluded its review, and I accept its decision in full,” York said. “To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry.”

York also called his actions “an inexcusable mistake” and said he takes full responsibility.

The punishment matches the discipline the NFL gave former Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay in 2014. The league suspended Irsay for six games and fined him $500,000 after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

York has been running the 49ers for nearly 20 years. He took over the team’s daily operations back in 2008 and officially became the main owner in 2024.

With him at the helm, the 49ers have made it to three Super Bowls, including two since bringing in head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch in 2017.

York had already skipped a few league meetings while the NFL looked into the matter. Now, he’ll be forced to sit out six games to serve his suspension.
