The Kansas City Chiefs could turn to a familiar face as they look for help at wide receiver. With Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton sidelined by injuries, Kansas City has begun exploring its options. The team has reportedly shown interest in bringing back Justin Watson, who spent three seasons with the Chiefs and helped them win two straight Super Bowls.

Watson isn’t the only former player on their radar, either. The Chiefs have also looked into bringing back Tyreek Hill, but his recovery from injury and off-the-field legal troubles could make that tricky. Either way, the team has some big choices to make if they want to add more depth to their receiver room.

According to Pete Sweeney of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs are among several teams interested in Watson. Sweeney shared the update on October 9, noting that the wide receiver could have multiple options as he looks for his next opportunity.

Watson played for Kansas City from 2022 through 2024. During that stretch, the Chiefs reached the Super Bowl in all three seasons and won back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024. He finished his Kansas City run with 64 catches for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns across 50 games.

The receiver also played a crucial role in Super Bowl LVIII. He made two important catches in the fourth quarter as Kansas City fought back to tie the game against the San Francisco 49ers before winning in overtime.

Watson spent the 2025 season with the Houston Texans, but they released him during roster cuts in August. A return could give the Chiefs a player who already understands Andy Reid’s offense. His ability to stretch the field and block in the running game could also help the team manage its current injury problems.

Rice suffered a hamstring injury during Kansas City’s Week 4 win over the Raiders. Thornton also dislocated his ankle in that same game and might be out for most, if not all, of the regular season.

At the same time, bringing back Hill is far from a sure thing. Kansas City contacted his agent to check in, but he’s still working his way back from a major knee injury and is dealing with a civil lawsuit involving his ex-wife.

The Chiefs could consider bringing back both Watson and Hill. But right now, Watson is the easier, more familiar fit as Kansas City looks to strengthen its receiving group.
