A longtime NFL radio announcer is absent from the broadcast booth this weekend. Detroit Lions play-by-play voice Dan Miller is not calling Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. His wife, Cynthia “Cindy” Miller, died on Saturday at the age of 63.
The couple had been married for 33 years. Cindy was a regular presence at Lions home games and sat in the fifth row behind the team’s bench. She shared four children with Dan and was a grandmother to two.
NFL Announcer Steps Away After Wife’s Passing

Jason Benetti is filling in on the radio call alongside Lomas Brown. Benetti addressed the situation during the pregame show.
“Our thoughts are with Dan right now, all weekend, and for the future, with the loss of his wife of 33 years, Cindy, a couple of days ago,” Benetti said, according to the Detroit Free Press.
He described Miller as one of the most sincere people he has met in Detroit and a fantastic voice of the Lions for more than two decades. Miller has served as the team’s radio announcer since 2005 and also works as sports director at WJBK-TV.
FOX 2 Detroit’s Jennifer Hammond sent a supportive message to Miller on social media.
“Prayers for Dan and his beautiful children during this unimaginable pain. Rest in Peace, Cindy, we’ve got him. Cancer Sucks.”

Family Shares Details of Life and Memorial Plans

Cindy was born in Falls Church, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Maryland. She worked as a news producer early in her career and later taught preschool. The couple met while she was at the Westwood One Network. Her obituary notes that she battled leptomeningeal disease and lit up any room she entered.
The family highlighted her love for the Lions and memories from the 2024 home playoff games she attended with her daughters. A memorial gathering is scheduled for Friday, October 16, from 3 to 6 p.m. at L.J. Griffin Funeral Home in Northville, Michigan, with a service to follow.
Miller had previously spoken about how his wife and children share his passion for football. Many within the Lions world expressed support for the family during this time. The radio booth continues without its longtime voice as the team takes the field.
