Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have worked together for 25 seasons. But as they say, all good things must come to an end.

Over these years, they have cemented their status as the longest-running broadcast pairing in NFL history. Their legendary partnership began in 2002 at Fox Sports and continued during their jump to ESPN’s Monday Night Football in 2022.

This next chapter was supposed to be cemented in place for many more years to come. However, it isn’t working out like that.

Tension has built inside the Monday Night Football booth that no one could have seen coming. It followed news that Joe Buck finalized a six-year contract extension worth approximately $108 million. The deal locks Buck as ESPN’s lead play-by-play voice through the 2031 Super Bowl cycle.

Meanwhile, Troy Aikman is in the final year of his current deal and has yet to receive a formal extension offer. That is apparently a major problem for him. The situation reportedly boiled over this past Monday night when Buck reportedly “broke the ice” regarding the contract issue.

Unfortunately, the conversation sparked a pregame argument between the two in the broadcast booth. It de-escalated enough for them to call the game, but the writing appears to be on the wall.

Troy Aikman recently addressed rumors of tension in the booth with his broadcast partner, Joe Buck.

Instead of denying the fight, Aikman stated that he will broadcast through this season and enter free agency at the end of the year. He added that he will see what happens next regarding his television network future.

“There’s probably a time and a place for all that. I don’t know if now is the time. I don’t know if it’s hard to figure out kind of what happened. I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I’m looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be.”

Without saying too much, he said just enough for many to believe that he might actually be gone after the 2026 NFL season.
