The 2026 NFL free agency has given fans plenty of surprises, but teams aren’t ready to give up. One of them found a tight end prospect in college even before this year’s draft. How is that possible? They looked at another sport.

Despite having a tight end with a bright future in Tyler Warren, the Indianapolis Colts set their sights on a basketball player to add depth to the position. In the last two years, there has been a heated debate about whether NFL players would dominate in the NBA and vice versa, and it seems that the answer could come very soon.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Colts signed Notre Dame basketball forward Carson Towt with the idea of turning him into a tight end.

Carson Towt just finished his college basketball career after a one-year tenure with the Fighting Irish. He spent the first four seasons of his journey with the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. In 154 games, he averaged 9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

His rebounding abilities make him a good prospect to transition into a tight end, and he is confident he can pull it off.

“Just an awareness of my physical gifts that were showcased on the basketball floor,” he said of his chances to transition into a football player. “I think this sport honors those things and my frame, how I developed as a player, kind of my play style and what I pride myself on.”

The Colts secured Daniel Jones’ services for two more years, and kept Alec Pierce around. They added a potential new weapon for the former New York Giants quarterback, but this is a gamble. On the other side, they are ready to part ways with Anthony Richardson, but a deal if far from materializing.
