President Donald Trump loves signing executive orders. He signed another one this week. Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

This change comes amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada. Many people had no clue about this change until they tuned into a preseason game.

Al Michaels Just Dragged Donald Trump Into An NFL Broadcast

The Cleveland Browns were taking on the New England Patriots on Thursday night. After scoring a touchdown, the Browns were set to kick the ball off. As the broadcast returned from commercial, Al Michaels began commenting on the scenery on the screen.

He mentioned Lake Erie, but took some time to take a shot at Donald Trump.

Al Michaels: “That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie… We’re not quite sure at this point. But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo. Anyway, you know what I’m talking about… Read the news.”

The Context of Trump’s Decision

Trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada completely collapsed. Consequently, the Trump administration imposed a sweeping 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including automobiles and steel. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and provincial leaders retaliated with dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs.

Because of this intensifying economic feud, President Trump declared that the U.S. would no longer do much business with the province of Ontario. Therefore, he decided to push forward with a geographic rebrand.

President Trump signed the executive order in the Oval Office. Subsequently, the order gives the U.S. Department of the Interior 30 days to officially update the body of water’s name in the domestic Geographic Names Information Service.
