The Kansas City Chiefs will be dropping “Kansas City” from their name, or at least the “City.”

Per reports, the team is officially set to move again.

Originally the Dallas Texans when founded by Lamar Hunt in 1960, the Chiefs relocated to Missouri three years later. The move resulted from competition with the Dallas Cowboys for market share.

It was predicted that the team would announce a move by Monday, which has come to fruition, somewhat.

Ironically, a loss to the Houston Texans helped seal their elimination from the playoffs. The Chiefs have since lost their starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to a devastating knee injury

It’s also believed that they are under severe financial constraints that could mark the end of their dynasty

According to the Kansas City Star, the team has informed officials of its plans to announce an exodus from Missouri.

“The Kansas City Chiefs have informed administrative officials that they will announce their move to Kansas today, according to sources who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.”

“The move is pending the expected approval of top Kansas lawmakers, who are meeting Monday in Topeka to discuss the proposal,” the Star added.

The move won’t come soon, however.

The team’s lease at Arrowhead Stadium doesn’t expire til 2030.

“The move is likely to send shockwaves across the Chiefs’ home state of Missouri, where officials have routinely touted ongoing negotiations to keep the team inside state lines,” the Star noted.

The Chiefs’ new stadium is expected to cost $3 million. It’s unknown how much will be publicly subsidized.

Still, Kansas plans to fund development through a supercharged version of its Sales Tax and Revenue, or STAR bonds program, which is designed to fund regional attractions by paying back developers with future sales tax revenue generated by tourists.”

This isn’t expected to go down well with Chiefs Kingdom…
