Former San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Bryce Huff shocked the NFL world on Thursday. Huff retired from the league at 27, following a decent season with the 49ers, who had an underwhelming defense in 2025.

Huff, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent, established himself as a solid player after six years in the competition. He won Super Bowl LIX with the Philadelphia Eagles, although he missed multiple games during the 2024 season.

In six seasons, Huff played 81 games, recording 108 tackles, 24 sacks, four forced fumbles and four passes defended. He took to Instagram to announce the shocking decision.

In his retirement announcement, Huff expressed his love for the game while announcing that he would found a company called Naberstone. Its mission was to build infrastructure to combat lithium-ion battery fires, considered more dangerous than normal fires.

“It’s time for the next chapter of my life. I’m building a company called Naberstone,” Huff said. “Lithium-ion batteries power the modern world but they carry a fire risk that current suppression technology was never designed to solve. We’re building safety infrastructure specifically for that problem. Proprietary suppression systems, advanced detection technology and containment built for lithium-ion battery events.

“This mission will save lives and protect critical infrastructure as battery technology continues to scale. I can’t ask the people who believe in this mission to go all in if I’m not willing to do the same. Football gave me everything and now it’s time for me to give everything to something new.”

Following a tough 2024 season, he couldn’t recover his level. The 49ers offered him a second chance, but Huff’s mission changed.
