The Buffalo Bills are keeping it internal, tabbing Joe Brady as their next head coach.

Perhaps the most overlooked candidate in this search was the offensive coordinator. He is overlooked no more. The Buffalo Bills sent a strong message following yet another early playoff exit in 2025: No more years without making it to the Super Bowl. Sean McDermott was fired, closing the door on one of the most productive eras in Bills history.

On Tuesday, the franchise found the man it believes can succeed where McDermott failed. The Bills are promoting OC Joe Brady to head coach. According to Adam Schefter, he is receiving a five-year deal.

The decision to sign Joe Brady comes after Philip Rivers turned them down. The former quarterback reportedly took his name out of consideration, The Athletic reported Monday.

Buffalo announced Friday that it had interviewed Rivers for their head coaching vacancy. During his retirement, Rivers served as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama.

In 2025, the Bills’ offense ranked No. 4 in total yards, No. 4 in points scored, No. 1 in rushing yards, and No. 15 in passing yards.
