Multiple Buffalo Bills players have expressed great bewilderment over the firing of head coach Sean McDermott.

In a shocking move, the Bills announced on Monday morning that they relieved Sean McDermott of his duties. The move caught the football world by surprise. McDermott went 98-50-0 in nine seasons and guided Buffalo to the postseason in eight of his nine seasons.

Unlike the NHL and NBA, NFL teams rarely fire coaches because of postseason shortcomings. Just look at how long Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh and Bill Belichick lasted with their previous teams.

After McDermott was let go, multiple Bills players expressed confusion and frustration on social media. Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips had the most blunt message, calling the firing “so stupid.”

DaQuan Jones was unhappy as well, writing, “Don’t make sense but got what ya wanted.” Shaq Lawson questioned the move, citing how much Sean McDermott changed Buffalo’s culture. Taron Johnson kept it short and wrote, “smh.”

Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show”, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero mentioned the Pittsburgh Steelers as a possible landing spot for McDermott. Pelissero doesn’t believe McDermott will want to take an offer from a rebuilding team.

Firing McDermott is extra head-scratching when you see that GM Brandon Beane a) kept his job and b) received a promotion to president of football operations.

Beane’s draft track record since 2020 has been horrible and would get him fired at most other organizations. He did nothing to fix a wide receiver corps after trading away Stefon Diggs. He didn’t bring in any quality defensive game-changers after striking out on the Von Miller free agent signing in 2022.

Despite having only Josh Allen and James Cook as certified stars, McDermott got Buffalo to 12 wins and within a play of reaching the AFC Championship Game. Good luck to Mr. Beane on finding a better candidate to replace McDermott.
