A Nashville reporter asked Cam Ward to grade his own preseason. The Titans quarterback flipped the question, then smiled when the answer came back cold.
The moment landed because the tape has been messy. Cam Ward sits at 13-of-24 for 126 yards, zero touchdowns, and no interceptions through two exhibitions. Tennessee still won both games, and he is telling everyone the real test starts in September.
Why Cam Ward Turned the Question Around
Jared Stillman asked how Ward would assess his play this preseason. Ward answered with a question of his own.
“How would you assess it?”
Stillman did not dodge. “Not well.”
Ward shot back, “You don’t think so? I’m glad you don’t think so.”
He kept going after the laugh.
“That’s good. I assess it as, did we win the game, or did we lose a game? I assess it as what I can get better at,” he said. “I believe we made a huge jump from Week 1 to Week 2 because we’re getting more condensed in a playbook. We’re not really opening everything up. And, you know, when we come to Week 1, I think it’ll be a different story.”
Reporter: “How would you assess your play this preseason?”
Cam Ward: “How would you assess it?”
Reporter: “Not well.”

The numbers explain the pushback. Ward went 5-of-12 for 57 yards in a 19-13 win at San Francisco. He then hit 8-of-12 for 69 yards in a 19-16 win over Seattle. All eight completions against the Seahawks stayed inside 10 yards. Four downfield shots missed. Robert Saleh said the deep ball “has got to be better.”
What Cam Ward Says Week 1 Will Show
Tennessee rebuilt the offense around him this offseason. Brian Daboll now calls plays after Robert Saleh took over a 3-14 roster. The Titans drafted Carnell Tate fourth overall and signed Wan’Dale Robinson to join Calvin Ridley in the wide receiver room. Robinson just left a Bears joint practice after a cheap hit in Nashville. The supporting cast is still finding its footing.
Last year Ward started all 17 games, threw for 3,169 yards, and posted 15 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He also ranked near the bottom in passer rating while taking 55 sacks. A late-season bump ended with a sprained AC joint in Week 18. He skipped surgery and reported slimmer this spring.
Ward framed the preseason as a process, not panic. He said this part is about slowing the game, not running the full menu.
Tennessee hosts Chicago on Saturday in the exhibition finale. Regular-season Week 1 against the Jets arrives September 13. That is the night Cam Ward says the story changes.
