CBS Sports President Shares Major Update On Tony Romo’s Future & Potential Return

CBS Sports president David Berson addressed Tony Romo’s status on Tuesday. The network still has no firm plan for his return. Romo remains on leave after his July arrest.

“I know there’s one topic that’s been in the news a lot lately,” he said. “I know it’s on people’s minds here, so I’m gonna hit that right out of the gate, and that has to do with Tony Romo being on leave until further notice.”

Berson stressed the personal and legal nature of the case.

“I hope you can respect and appreciate that this is a personal matter and a legal one for Tony, so I can’t speak to that aspect of things,” he explained. “What I can say is it’s an evolving situation, and therefore we’re still assessing.”

He added that no final decision exists yet. The network needed certainty for the coming season. Hundreds of staff members require clear direction for production and marketing.

CBS also considered brand impact.

“In making this decision, we had to consider the impact on our image and on our brand. That’s very important to us,” Berson said.

The focus must stay on the games and the product.

Tony Romo’s Spot Filled by J.J. Watt for Now

J.J. Watt steps into the lead analyst role. He joins Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. Berson expressed confidence in the group.

“Fortunately, we have a very deep bench, and I’m really proud of the way everyone’s stepping up and responding,” he noted.

“As you know, J.J. Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as our lead team in Tony’s absence. They’re already knee-deep in planning, and I have every confidence they’ll be great.”

Romo still has a court date set for September 21. Reports note he remains owed a large sum under his existing deal. The network has not detailed any morals clause decisions.
