A member of the Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor revealed in February that he would have a kidney transplant. After a 10 year-battle with kidney disease, the four-time Pro Bowler received the help he needed to live a normal life.
Willie Anderson took to social media to let fans know he would undergo the procedure following a decade-long battle. The pain medication he took during his NFL career caused his organs to deteriorate.
“10 years ago I was diagnosed with kidney disease,” Anderson posted. “Over the past 10 years it’s gotten significantly worse.
“That was one of the main reasons I wanted to lose those 60 pounds to see if I could make it better. Well, I have an announcement. You have to listen to the video. Some folks know this already. A lot don’t. I never wanted everyone to feel sorry for me. I wanted to give happy news. Please listen! And I hope this helps the next athlete.”
Willie Anderson Shares Health Update After Kidney Transplant

On Thursday, Willie Anderson provided an update on his condition. He posted a video message on X to confirm that the transplant went well and that he would begin his recovery.
“God is great, man. Everything went well, (the) kidney’s well,” Anderson said. “I’m a little sore. My pressure is now coming down now. Doing well.”
Anderson’s long-time girlfriend was the donor. The three-time All-Pro dedicated words to the woman.
“My Lady is the strongest person I know,” he said. “She woke me up tickling my feet out of surgery. She knows I hate that. I knew it was her when I awoke.”
The tackle thanked fans for their support and prayers, reminding people to consider donating a kidney to somebody who needs it.
Willie Anderson played 13 seasons in the NFL (12 with the Bengals and one with the Baltimore Ravens). He played 195 games, becoming one of the best players in Cincinnati’s recent history.
