Commanders Punter Tress Way Noticed NFL Ref Was Clueless About OT Coin Toss Rules, So He Cheated Him With An Insane Darth Vader-Like Mind Trick [VIDEO]

Washington Commanders captain Tress Way took advantage of NFL referees on Sunday Night Football, but it still did not work out in his favor.
Botched coin tosses have repeatedly occurred throughout the 2025 NFL season, and it happened again on Sunday night.
Earlier this month, NFL referee Clay Martin completely botched the overtime coin toss that benefited Bryce Young and the visiting Carolina Panthers against the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons have been victims of this at least twice this season.
The coin toss is straightforward, as the winner decides whether to kick or receive, with the other team then choosing which end zone to defend.
Washington Commanders Punter Tress Way Tricks Ref In OT

At the start of overtime between the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos, captain Tress Way said, “We’re gonna kick that way” and pointed in the direction he wanted to kick after his team won the toss.
That is an issue since the winning team shouldn’t have the option to choose whether to kick or receive, AND the direction they’ll be going. Instead, the Broncos should’ve been the team to decide which direction they’ll be going after the Commanders opted to kick it away. Unfortunately, referee Land Clark didn’t correctly do his job and correct Tress Way’s mistake.
Clark simply asked Way, “Kick that way?”
Clark then asked, “You’re gonna kick?” And Way answered, “Yeah.”

After speaking with the Washington Commanders punter, he then turned to Broncos captain Bo Nix and said, “You’ll receive, this way,” pointing Nix to the side of the field that Way wanted to go. Nix, likely unaware of the rule book as well, did not object to the ruling, per PFT.
And with that, Way got away with tricking the ref.

In the end, it wouldn’t affect the Broncos as they would go on to score a touchdown, and then their defense held up on the other end to secure their 10th victory of the 2025 season.
