Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton provided more heartbreaking details about Bo Nix’s ankle injury that ended his special 2025 season.

Shortly after the Broncos defeated the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round, news broke that Bo Nix had suffered a season-ending ankle injury. It put a significant damper on the Broncos’ first playoff win in 10 years.

Sure enough, second-string quarterback Jarrett Stidham was unable to deliver in Nix’s place. The veteran backup struggled in a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, turning the ball over twice in the sloppy defeat.

Speaking to reporters, Payton dropped more surprising details about Nix’s ankle injury. As it turns out, the second-year quarterback has an ankle condition that made an injury inevitable, per Arnie Melendrez Stapleton of the Associated Press:

“What was found was a condition that was predisposed — they always find a little more when they go in. It wasn’t a matter of if, it was a matter of when. When you look at the play and you’re trying to evaluate it — the operating surgeon said that this was going to happen sooner than later. Now, you go about the rehab, proper orthotics, all those things.”

This was one of several notable stories out of Denver on Tuesday. In another surprise, Payton fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi cornerbacks coach Addison Lynch and wide receivers coach Keary Colbert.

Nix finished his second season with 3,931 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 356 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Bo Nix & Broncos Have A Bright Future To Look Forward To

This obviously wasn’t the end Nix and the Broncos wanted in 2025. Seeing how much the Patriots’ offense struggled, it’s safe to say a healthy Nix would have led Denver to victory if he played in the AFC Championship Game.

But the Broncos have to be proud of what they accomplished this year. Nix is clearly the franchise quarterback Payton envisioned. Courtland Sutton, RJ Harvey and Evan Engram headline a nice set of playmakers.

And of course, that defense is loaded with young stars (Patrick Surtain II, Jahdae Barron, Nik Bonitto) and established veterans (Jonathan Cooper, Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga). Nix has that clutch gene, and his Broncos will undoubtedly be in title contention for years to come.
