Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones responded to a reporter’s question about the club’s search for a defensive coordinator in the most cringeworthy way.

As most expected, the Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus on Tuesday. The former Chicago Bears’ head coach oversaw a defense that allowed 30.1 points per game, most in the NFL.

With Eberflus being shown the door, the Cowboys will be on their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years. Obviously, this is not ideal for Jerry Jones, who places a great emphasis on continuity.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Jones was asked if head coach Brian Schottenheimer would choose the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator. Jones made a bizarre reference to President Donald Trump and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela.

“Trump just said it,” Jerry Jones said. “I’m running Venezuela.”

More head-scratching soundbites from Jones. The more that stays the same.

Dallas finished with a 7-9-1 record, clinching back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since the 2000-02 campaigns. Jones prioritized the long-term future by trading All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. We’ll find out if that pays dividends.

Jones can talk all he wants about his desire to win Super Bowls. Now is the time for him to put his money where his mouth is.

The Cowboys have several objectives to rebuild into a Super Bowl contender. Obviously, the first goal is to find a competent defensive coordinator. They also need to re-sign star wideout George Pickens after a career year, and potentially running back Javonte Williams.

Dallas also has some fixing to do on a terrible defense that lacks game-changers outside of Quinnen Williams and DaRon Bland. If Jones is serious about competing for a Super Bowl, he’ll spend the necessary resources.
