A video of the Las Vegas Raiders selecting the wrong Byron Young at the 2023 NFL Draft has gone viral.

With the No. 70 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Raiders surprised many by reaching for the Alabama defensive tackle. Seven picks later, the Los Angeles Rams selected the OTHER Byron Young, a defensive end out of Tennessee.

Two players with the same name. Both defensive linemen. Both were drafted in the third round of the same class, so any football fan easily mixed them up.

Young was waived after his rookie season, before landing with the Philadelphia Eagles. As for the Rams’ Young? He has racked up 27.5 sacks over his first three seasons, including a career-high 12 in 2025, per Pro Football Reference.

With the two Youngs having much different careers up to this point, some folks are speculating that the Raiders mixed up the player they wanted. Here’s the video of then-Raiders GM Dave Ziegler calling the Alabama product:

Some fans and scouts have noted that it was a massive reach when the Raiders took Young out of Alabama. Perhaps they meant to take the Rams’ Young, who was rated as a much better prospect:

Even Raiders ESPN radio host Qiant “Your Boy Q” Myers thinks that the Raiders selected the wrong Young:

The Raiders are one of the NFL’s worst drafting teams. For all we know, they took the very player they wanted. Remember, this team drafted JaMarcus Russell first overall in 2007 over future legends like Calvin Johnson, Patrick Willis, Joe Thomas, and Darrelle Revis.
