Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo faces new scrutiny after bodycam footage dropped. The video captures him preparing for a field sobriety test in unusual fashion. Officers stopped him on July 23 in Milwaukee.
Romo drove southbound on Interstate 43 near downtown. Deputies pulled him over for unsafe passing. They noted red, glassy eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath.
He told officers he came from a golf course. He claimed he headed to meet his grandparents. When asked about drinks, Romo said he had “zero.”
Tony Romo Stretches Before the Tests Begin
Romo asked for time to prepare once deputies moved him to a level area.
“Can I do an exercise?” he said. He explained the drive aggravated previous back injuries.
Romo then leaned against the front of a police vehicle. He stretched his back and body for about 20 seconds. The moment quickly went viral across social media.
One officer told him to proceed.
“Go ahead, dude,” the deputy said.
Romo completed his warm-up routine before the tests started.

Deputies led him through standardized field sobriety tests for more than 12 minutes. They repeated instructions several times. Romo interrupted often and struggled to follow directions.
He removed his sandals during one portion. Also placed his hands on his lower back and bent over again. He mentioned his back surgeries multiple times. Officers asked about recent head injuries.
“Over the years, yes, but not recently,” Romo replied with a smile.
Tony Romo Fails Tests and Refuses Breathalyzer
Tony Romo performed poorly overall, according to the official report. He could not keep balance. He stopped walking, missed heel-to-toe steps, and made an improper turn.
When deputies offered a preliminary breath test, he refused.
“Oh no. We’re not doing that,” Romo said. “I’ve heard from multiple lawyers, ‘Don’t ever do that.’ So, we’re not going to do that.”
He later asked if he passed. Officers informed him of the arrest. They placed him back in handcuffs and booked him on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.
Wisconsin treats a first-offense OWI as a civil traffic matter. Romo received a citation for refusing the chemical test. His court date is set for September 21.
The bodycam footage also shows earlier tension. Romo wanted to call his lawyer and recorded the stop on his phone.
“Because I’m coming from a golf course, you think I’m drunk?” he asked.
Deputies found small alcohol containers in his bag. Romo asked whether anyone had drunk them. The officer did not answer and continued the process.
CBS has kept Romo in his analyst role for now. The network faces ongoing questions about the situation. Executives made a final decision on his broadcasting future.
Romo remains free after booking and release the same night. The case will play out in court later this year. The viral clip of his pre-test warm-up continues to draw strong reactions.
According to NBC DFW reporting, the deputy documented multiple signs of possible impairment throughout the stop.
