Dallas Cowboys Still Looking To Add Talent At Key Position

The Dallas Cowboys have addressed quite a few needs this offseason, but linebacker is still a position with some uncertainty. The team has talent there, but injuries and a lack of experience remain concerns.

DeMarvion Overshown is good, but he has played in only 19 games since the Cowboys drafted him in the third round out of Texas. Dee Winters also showed potential after becoming a starter for the San Francisco 49ers in 2025. However, the 49ers traded him to Dallas during the NFL Draft in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

Those additions were not the Cowboys’ first choice. Reports said the team tried to sign linebackers Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, and Devin Lloyd when free agency began, but they were unable to land any of them.

Cowboys beat writer Jon Machota believes the team’s actions tell the real story. Speaking Monday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Machota said the front office already showed it wanted more help at linebacker.

“I am a huge actions speak louder than words person, and that absolutely applies to covering this team,” Machota said. He pointed to Dallas’ failed attempt to trade for Maxx Crosby before the team added Rashan Gary and selected Malachi Lawrence in the first round.

Machota said those moves showed the Cowboys responded after missing out on Crosby. He does not see the same level of commitment at linebacker.

“But free agency starts and they have interest in Devin Lloyd, Dean, Walker and, does Dee Winters make up for that? Is that enough?” Machota said. “You already kind of showed your cards that you knew that you needed more at linebacker. That’s why I think they’re not done there.”

The Cowboys still have reasons to feel good about their linebacker group. If Overshown can stay healthy for an entire season, he has the talent to make a difference. Winters also has a chance to build on the progress he showed last year and could fit well in Christian Parker’s defense. Dallas is also hoping fifth-round pick Shemar James takes a big step forward after a tough rookie season.

Even so, the Cowboys still have time to add another linebacker before the regular season begins. Teams often find help through trades, free agency, or players who become available after training camp roster cuts. That gives Dallas several options if the current group doesn’t perform well during camp.

For now, though, the Cowboys seem happy to wait and see how things play out.
