Somebody on the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff had to go, and Matt Eberflus was selected as that person.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on Tuesday that Eberflus is no longer the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. The move comes two days after the season ended with another loss. Dallas finished last in the league in points per game and 30th in yards per game.

Their defense was a main topic of discussion all year, especially after trading Micah Parsons to the Packers.

The team stayed under .500 for the majority of the year. Jerry Jones then got things rolling with multiple trades. He was praised months later when he traded for Quinnen Williams. Dallas also acquired linebacker Logan Wilson in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals.

It still wasn’t enough to change the fortunes of the defense. Matt Eberflus was on the hot seat and remained there all year. Now he is looking for a job.

Something had to change for the Dallas Cowboys’ defense after a disastrous season. Tuesday brought that change when the team fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after just one season. The Cowboys will now have a fourth different defensive coordinator in as many seasons.

Dallas ranked as the NFL’s worst scoring defense, allowing 30.1 points per game. It only gets worse from here. That was the second-most points per game allowed in the 66-season history of the Cowboys, per CBS.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones, along with the Cowboys’ brass, will begin their search for Eberflus’ successor. One primary target for the vacancy on the sideline: Brian Flores of the Minnesota Vikings.

As for Matt Eberflus, he has gotten a pink slip for two straight years. In 2024, the Bears fired him as head coach the day after a Thanksgiving loss to the Lions.

He may need to take a year off before returning to coaching.
