NFL fans learned about terrible news involving a longtime writer ahead of the 2025 playoffs. While some prepare to face a big challenge in their quest for Super Bowl LX, and others are mentioned in trade rumors, sports columnist Pat Caputo shared devastating news regarding his health.

The 97.1 The Ticket and Fox 2 figure revealed he was dealing with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer on Monday, labeling it as a “death sentence.”

“For those wondering where I’ve been: I have been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, commonly referred to as a ‘death sentence’ and had two other serious ailments which put me in ICU for several days. It was sudden. I’ve literally been on my back for weeks. Bless you all,” he announced.

Caputo’s announcement was met with plenty of positive words. Many fans, colleagues and more sports figures sent lots of love his way.

“Don’t believe the ‘sentence’. Keep the faith!” former TNA president Dixie Carter wrote.

“Legend. Stay strong my friend. So much support out here for you,” ESPN writer Dan Wetzel wrote.

“Super sad to hear this Pat. I’ve been listening to you for years. Praying for you and your family,” one fan said.

“Praying for you! I have never seen so many people being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My oldest brother was just diagnosed as well,” another fan said.

“My wife and I are so saddened to hear. We looked forward every weekend to listening to you. We will pray for you,” another fan said.

“Damn Pat, I am so sorry. I hope it is not a death sentence for you. We need you healthy and back in the studio. Prayers of course are coming,” another fan said.

Caputo hadn’t tweeted since Nov. 5, when he discussed the Detroit Lions’ 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders.
