It established him as an elite defensive force at both the collegiate and professional levels, earning him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Playing as a defensive end for the Arkansas Razorbacks, Smith Jr. became one of the most dominant defenders in college football history.
Smith earned back-to-back unanimous First-Team All-American honors in 1981 and 1982. He also set the Arkansas all-time program record with 63 tackles for loss. Transitioning to linebacker in the NFL, Smith Jr. was selected 5th overall in the 1983 NFL Draft.
He spent his entire 10-year pro career (1983–1992) as a cornerstone of the Chargers’ defense.
