Green Bay Packers GM Sends Loud & Clear Message On Josh Jacobs’ Future With The Team

Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst gave a cautious update on where things stand with running back Josh Jacobs.

The Packers still hope Jacobs will play this season. Gutekunst also said he expects the running back to return. But he made it clear that the team does not have all the information it needs yet.

“I think that’s to be seen,” Gutekunst said when asked if Jacobs would play for the Packers this year. “Certainly hopeful that he will, and certainly would expect that, but we’re gonna let that process play out.”

Jacobs is currently dealing with legal trouble after prosecutors officially hit him with two misdemeanor charges, battery and criminal damage to property, on Aug. 27. The charges came from an alleged domestic violence incident that led to his arrest nearly three months ago.

Packers Will Wait Before Making A Decision

Gutekunst said the Packers will let the legal process run its course before they decide Jacobs’ future.

The team has not seen the video connected to the incident. Police reportedly have video, but authorities have not made it public.

“We have not seen the video,” Gutekunst said. “Again, those are legal things going on right now, so we will let those play out; that’s really not for us.”

Gutekunst also addressed the possibility of the Packers releasing Jacobs. He did not rule it out.

“We’ll let the process play out before we make any of those kinds of decisions,” he said. “We’ll see.”

For now, Green Bay must prepare to play without its starting running back. Jacobs remains on the Commissioner Exempt list, and the timing of his return depends on how the legal situation develops.

The Packers have already added depth at running back. They traded for former third-round pick Kaleb Johnson. He will compete with MarShawn Lloyd for playing time. Chris Brooks gives the team another option.

Jacobs has one year left on his contract after this season. Green Bay could save $13.5 million by releasing him after the season.

That makes his future with the Packers even more uncertain. Even if Jacobs returns this year, the 2026 season could mark the end of his time in Green Bay.
